This weekend did not go exactly as planned. I had intended on doing a longish run on Friday evening, a 4 hour swim on saturday followed by a few hours on the bike. Sunday could then be a day to relax.
The run went as planned but afterwards I had a call telling me that the swim had to be postponed until Sunday due to bad conditions. Sea swimming is always a bit unpredicatable. This meant the cycle was done on saturday before heading to my aunts in Bournemouth so I could get to Weymouth in time for the 10am start sunday morning.
It looked set to be a beautiful day as I got on the bus (bloomin rail replacements). After a short doze, however, I awoke to find it pouring with rain. I was going to be getting wet anyway so I guess it didn't matter. During the swim, the sun did decide to come out for a little bit. Although it does not make any difference to the water temperature it means you can pretend its a bit warmer than it really is.
I met Julian and his brother at the boat, his brother was coming along to help out. Both of us were planning on doing 4 hours. As always the first hour was the worst, again there was a problem with my goggles but I had come prepared this time and had two spares. No excuses this time round. The first 2 and a half ish hours were spent in pretty choppy waters and the last hour and a half in calmer waters. I'm pretty happy being in choppy water, as is Julian. I want my training swims to be as tough as possible so there are less chances of surprises on race day. The boat pilot, Tom, did nearly run me over at one point in the choppy waters, I reckon he was trying to get me to get a move on! Apart from that I really enjoyed the swim, it was a bit warmer than last time (11.5C) so didnt feel the cold too much either. All is on track for A2A and am starting to believe that I may actually complete this.
