Dover Run

Having  run  the  majority  of  the  Enduroman  Arch  to  Arc  route  already  I decided  last  weekend  to  do  the  last  section. To  make  the  run  worthwhile  I  started  about  ten  miles  back  from  where  I  finished  last  time  to  get  a  good  thirty  mile  run.

Having  had  a  slight  knee  problem  during  the  week  I  was  going  to  see  how  it  went  and  take  it  easy,  however  I  had  no  problems  with  it  during  the  run.

This  time  I  was  fairly  lucky  with  the  weather,  although  it  was  freezing  there  was  no  rain.  Myself  and  Jason  (on  bike)  set  out  at  a  reasonable  time  in  the  morning,  no  5am  starts  this  time  round  and  somehow  managed  to  complete  the  distance  in  just  over  4hrs.

After  getting  to  Dover  I  got  in  to  the  sea  for  a  quick  paddle,  it  was  just  as  good  as  having  an  ice  bath!

I  had  intended  on  having  a  swim  at  Norman's  Bay  near  Rosie  and  Jason's  place  on  the  sunday  but  weather  conditions  dictated  otherwise  so  we  went  for  a  walk  instead.

A  successful  training   weekend,  next  recce  will  be  the  cycle  route  from  Calais  to  Paris  at  some  point.

I  have  also  booked  in  to  do  the  Lanzarote  Ultra  in  April  which  is  organised  by  Enduroman  and  is  exactly  half  the  arch  to  arc  distance  which  will  be  a  good  test  of  how  I  should  cope  in  July,  here's  hoping  it  goes  well.

Next  race  is  the  Beacon's  Ultra,  a  45  mile  run  on  the  6th  December,  which  is  organised  by  Likey's.  It  is  the  first  time  this  race  has  been  held  and  has  been  full  up  for  a  while.  It  looks  set  to  be  a  good  race!

LANE RAGE

I  have  recently  discovered  that  I  suffer  from  Lane  Rage,  similar  to  road  rage  it  is  caused  by  idiotic  swimmers. In  the  last  few  weeks  I  have  been  suffering  while  the  same  guy  slowly  swims  breast  stroke  (badly)  in  the  fast  lane  at  my local  pool  while  the  rest  of  us are  trying  to get  some  training  in.

I  thought  I  had  it  sussed  as  I  stayed  in  after  he  left  thinking  I  could  finally get some  good  uninterrupted  lengths  in  but  then  a  large  group  of  “swimmers” got  in  and  proceeded  to  do  approximately  two  lengths  then  stood   in  the  lane chatting!

It  has  been  suggested  that  I  try  a  couple  of  lengths  of  butterfly  to  get  rid  of these  people  or  to  accidentally  kick  them  but  any  suggestions  that  won’t  get  me  thrown  out  of  the  pool  would  be  gratefully  received.

Rant  Over  (for now anyway)

Last weekend I decided to do a recce of part of the Enduroman Arch to Arc run route. The run starts at Marble Arch so two of my crew and myself stayed up in London the evening before in order to get an early start. Given that I will most likely be leaving London in the dark on the actual event I wanted to replicate this so we left Marble Arch around 5am.

The strange thing about running in London at this time was that many people were on their way home from Halloween parties, seeing the Grim Reaper less than ten miles into the run was an ominous start. Sure enough the weather soon turned and the rest of the run was spent in the pouring rain.

Rosie and Jason took it in turns to cycle with me while the other drove and stopped occasionally to ensure I had enough food etc. I couldn't have asked for a better crew than these two and know I will be in safe hands come July.

In the end we did as far the 67 mile mark which took a little over 13 hours. Given that there had been a few stops to change kit and to try to warm up I was quite pleased with the time.

The following day I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I had very little in the way of aches and pains which gave me quite a confidence boost for next July.

I plan on running the rest of the route in a couple of weeks but will probably start a little further back than I stopped in order to get a good 30 mile run in.
